The History Of Challenge Coins
Challenge coins have been a part of the military history for a long time. All those people who have been trying to know about the details related to the challenge coins should know that they have been a part of the world for a few centuries however they became an eternal part of the military during the First World War when a group of Air Force pilots were given Challenge coins as a memory of being trained together by one officer. It was seen later that this single coin became the cause of saving the life of an officer. It has been recorded that the coins were carried in a leather pouch around the neck of the pilots. One of the pilots had to eject due to heavy damage to his plane landing in the German territory.
The Germans took everything he had in his pockets but the coin remained out of their eyes. By luck the pilot escaped the Germans and got up with the British officers some how but he had nothing to prove his identity. Showing the coin his execution was delayed till his identity could be proven. Once proven the pilot reached his homeland safe and sound and from there the tradition of getting special coins minted for each battalion and carrying them at all times became a tradition.
There were several people belonging to different military sections that got special challenge coins minted for their soldiers and gave them out to them for their own safety and well being. It has been noted that these challenge coins are to be carried by the different soldiers at all times and they can be challenged for these coins in off duty an on duty hours both. The coins are to be kept secret and not revealed to all and in case of loss or theft they have to be reported to their brigade commander immediately.
